The day I was born,
it felt like a gentle breeze passing through my nostrils,
a sign of the beginning of my life.

I soon realized that my life had begun
and I was growing up slowly.

As I grew older, I noticed something shifting away
like a mysterious mist of smoke.

The problem was,
I couldn’t talk.

Most things felt like imagination,
from loving others to boastfulness.

I observed the erosion
of the modest characteristics of the girl child.

Even though I was a little girl, I witnessed gender-based violence against girls.

Fondling of young breasts and crying,
followed by forceful acts breaking the girl child’s innocence before she even understood what it meant.

Deep within, hope fades
every minute in every corner of this world we live in.

The day I realized the violence against the girl child,
I felt like I had lost the precious jewel of happiness that brings joy to my soul.

I feel deeply wronged by
the world’s acts of adultery, lying,
and the murder of girls and women to silence them.

Foolishness prevails among humanity,
and I wonder when the world will stand united
against all these evils.

I don’t know who will be the next target of this brutality,
but I won’t be afraid.
I won’t stop.

The Creator, who is everything to me, says,
“Do not fear, for I am with you.
I will strengthen you with my righteous right hand.”

I live to stand for the girl child,
so her cheeks remain tear-free.
There’s no need for her to mourn when no one has died.

I strive to eliminate all forms of foolishness in humanity.

Girl child, don’t be tormented
by ruthless people who don’t know
why they were created.

I am a girl, standing up for the girls.
This is a sign of change.
